After four years of holding the country’s richest golf tournament, Jakarta will hand the hosting privileges of the Indonesia Open to Bali, an event promoter said Thursday.

The US$1.25 million tournament will be held from February until March this year.

“Dreamland New Kuta Golf Resort will host the championship for the first time,” John Eu, Global One Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement.
The new venue is in the South Western rim of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, overlooking famous surfing destinations at Balangan Beach and the Indian Ocean.

The par-72 championship course measures over 7,500 yards and was designed by U.S. group Golf Plan, made up of Ronald Fream, David Dale and Kevin Ramsey. It is believed to be the first “links style” golf course in the country.
Eu said the organizers would continue to increase the tournament’s prize money to attract the world’s best players and promote golf in Indonesia.
Asian Tour executive chairman Kyi Hla Han welcomed the decision to move the Indonesia Open to Bali, saying it would spread the game across the country.

Bali will spend nearly IDR 400 million to plant the seeds of 1.35 million trees next year, as part of the central government’s plan to further “green up” the island.

The seeds, including chestnut and mahogany, will be planted inside and outside forests all across Bali, said Dewa Dharma Putra, head of the environmental division of the province’s Regional Development Planning Agency.

The program, which is part of the Gerhan (forests and field rehabilitation movement) initiative launched by the government in 2004, actually began in Bali in 2006; it has simply been renamed the “Green Bali” program.
The aim of the program is to plant local trees and reduce deforested areas in Bali by a minimum of 9,000 hectares every year.

Putu Subagiartha, head of the Bali Regional Development Planning Agency, hoped the re-planting program could increase the island’s attractiveness to tourists.

“We have to prove that we can conserve our environment as well as develop our tourism industry at the same time,” he said.

Sukhavati also contribute to conserve the enviroments by planting trees in around our Bali luxury villas to provide a beautiful natural enviroment.

Java and Bali will receive an additional 1,535 megawatts (MW) of power supply this year, although the increased capacity would still not still reach an ideal level, state power firm PT PLN said over the weekend.

PLN’s director for the Java and Bali region, Murtaqi Syamsuddin, said PLN’s system in the area would receive more power from three new power plants and two upgraded power plants.

“Some of the power plants under the 10,000 MW crash program will start to operate this year and will increase power capacity for the Java and Bali system,” Murtaqi said as quoted by Antara.

The government launched the first 10,000 MW power project in 2006 in a bid to anticipate increasing power demand, especially in the Java-Bali system where power demand rises by an average of 6.72 percent every year.

Balinese celebrated the Saraswati Day on Saturday, a day when the Hindus praise and thank the goddess of knowledge for bestowing the ability to read, write and understand nature upon humans.

Thousands of students all across the island participated in the celebration, wearing traditional Balinese costumes and prayed together at their schools in the morning.

Some of the students later joined a mass of prayers at the Agung Jagatnata Temple in Denpasar where they performed traditional musical instruments.

Hindus celebrate the Saraswati Day once in 210 days and give young coconut leafs as an offering to the gods in the event. In Bali, most schools and universities place Dewi Saraswati statue in front of the buildings as a symbol of knowledge and technology.

Australian tourists are returning to Bali in greater numbers than ever before, according to newly released tourism statistics and information from key airlines.

“Advance bookings dropped off for a period prior to December but there has been a lot of last-minute bookings for the Christmas and New Year periods,” Jetstar spokeswoman Simone Pregellio said. “And our premium flights, like the Saturday Melbourne to Bali route, are absolutely full.”

Garuda’s Jane Milojevic concurred. “We’re confident that Bali will emerge pretty well during the start of 2009, as people make their holiday plans and they start to consider the great value Bali offers”.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show Bali remains the third-most popular foreign holiday destination for that country, behind only Thailand and New Zealand.

Indonesian records put Australian arrivals in Bali to the end of September, 2008 at about 230,000, with officials hoping this figure will swell to 350,000 next year.
