Happiness

May 23,2017

What is this Worldly State of Mind that constantly seems to elude us?

Most of us probably don’t need a definition for happiness, we know it when we feel it. We often use the term to describe a range of emotions, such as, joy, pleasure, bliss, exhilaration and contentment. But too often are these emotions dependent on an experience or the attainment of some luxury, or material object. In order to overcome the fluctuating states of the mind, we need to learn how to create a permanent state of internal happiness, that is irrespective of external pleasures.

There are a lot of contributing factors to happiness. Money being one of them, but only to a certain extent. Money gives us freedom and removes the stress of life’s basic necessities – housing, food and clothing. Along with money, genetic makeup, life circumstances, achievements and social relationships all can influence our level of happiness as well.

But these things to some degree can be out of our control. So regardless of our financial status, life circumstances or achievements, what can we do to improve our overall state of happiness? And it comes down to what we indulge in daily.

Here are a few things that you can start to incorporate in your day to help improve your overall state of mind and your overall levels of happiness.

Digestion and Gut Health

This is probably the most important practice to place attention on, and that is the practice of eating. It is well-known that digestion and gut health is one of the major contributors to physical and mental health, even Hippocrates stated “all disease begins in the gut”. There is not only a direct connection between the food you eat and your health, but there is a direct connection between the food you eat and your level of happiness. This is an in depth discussion, but start of simple, eliminate packaged food, refined sugars and processed food, and fill your pantry with whole foods (fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, grains, dairy). Get plenty of fruit into your diet, especially dark berries, these contain polyphenols that are important to gut health and overall wellbeing. Sleep

This should come as no surprise, getting a good night’s rest is the best way to wake up fresh, energetic and happy. Aim to get to sleep no later than 10pm.

Exercise

Get active, regular exercise will help you feel less stressed, less anxious, and generally happier. Exercise releases dopamine, the happy chemical, making you feel full of pleasure and joy. Play, move, run, swim, cycle, stretch and get happy.

Tonic Herbs

Take tonic herbs daily. This will keep you feeling energised, happy, healthy and strong. (Remember to consult with your health practitioner first)

Moringa

This herb contains a mega load of antioxidants, minerals, protein, essential fiber, and cleansing properties. Also known for its power to supply sustainable energy, lower blood pressure, and aid in adrenal support, moringa acts as a coagulant, attaching itself to harmful material and toxins within the body and flushing them quite rapidly.

Tulsi

Tulsi is Ayurveda’s holiest of healing herbs, an adaptogenic powerhouse known for its digestive healing abilities, cardiovascular protection, and potent anti-inflammatory nature. It lowers cholesterol levels, prevents hypoglycemia, eases stress by calming the nervous system, prevents migraines, and repairs skin damage (topically and internally). It is a great overall super herb.

Ashwagandha

Best known for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, Ashwagandha is a superb herb for increased strength and energy, improved mental function and memory, leading to increased states of happiness and reduced levels of depression.

Meditation

This simple and natural technique is one of the best ways to reduce stress and increase happiness. Practice daily and see your levels of happiness improve like never before.
